Beli, an elaborate multi-course dinner, is totally a delicious affair. You’ll be surprisingly spoilt by the multitude of flavours that you will find in the kitchens of Newar people. The meal accompanied by a round of complimentary Thwon (rice wine) or Aila (home brewed liquor) will be served in the following order.
Starter:
Baji: Crunchy rice flakes
Musya Palu: Soya & Ginger
Waauncha: Spinach salad garnished with soya powder
Aalu Achar: Potato cubes marinated with herbs and spices
Chhwela: (succulent barbequed buff cubes marinated with rare local spices)
Main:
Dyakula: Slow cooked meat stew (buff/chicken)
Chatamari: Rice pancake with toppings of your choice
Woh: Black gram pancake with topping of your choice
Aalu taama: Tangy bamboo shoot soup
Chyau: Spicy mushroom
Aamli paau: Sweet & sour hog plum pickle
Dessert:
Chaku Yomaree : a special confection made of rice flour and sesame & molasses paste filling
Khuwa Yomaree : Yomaree with dried condensed milk filling
Juju Dhau: King of curd from the ancient city of Bhaktapur
This meal is usually served to the guests visiting a Newar family or during family gatherings which is less elaborate than the grand feast.
